The Art Of Science

I am a huge fan of artists, and of the work they do.  And what better way to experience the beauty of biology than through art?  This page is dedicated to artists and their work, in various media.

Jewelry, paintings, photography, microscopy images, and music are some of the many forms I would like to represent on this page as it develops.

From Nervous System comes this innovative approach to jewelry design.  Modeling their designs after various biological forms, this MIT-educated mathematician/biologist-architect duo are creating some incredibly progressive and beautiful pieces of art.

One of my favorites is this Radiolarian-inspired brooch:

I was introduced to Andy Goldsworthy (1956- ) while teaching about various artists at my children's school.  An artist, photographer, and environmentalist, he creates temporary and permanant works of art with natural and found objects such as leaves, petals, rocks, water - anything he finds in nature.  His work is breathtaking.

“As with all my work, whether it’s a leaf on a rock or ice on a rock, I’m trying to get beneath the surface appearance of things. Working the surface of a stone is an attempt to understand the internal energy of the stone.”

- Andy Goldsworthy
